The importance of in-service inspection and testing (PAT testing)

Electric shock can kill or seriously injure, The Electricity At Work requires in regulation 4(2) that : As may be necessary to prevent danger, all systems shall be maintained so as to prevent, so far as reasonably practicable, such danger. Having a robust service and inspection programme in place not only ensures that any electrical appliance asset is safe to use it also ensures that your commitments to current regulations are met.

What is PAT testing?

Pat testing is an abbreviation given to the in-service inspection and testing of electrical equipment, The inspection and testing of electrical appliances can be broken down into three separate categories

  • User Checks - These are visual checks that any employee should carry out before the use of any electrical appliance, a record of any faults that are found should be submitted to the companies responsible person.
  • Formal Visual Inspection - These inspections are carried out by trained technicians and the results of each inspection are to be formally recorded.
  • Combined Inspection & Testing - These inspections and tests are carried out by trained technicians, the results of both each inspection and test are to be officially recorded, the data is then to be cross referenced to the previous test results to ensure all electrical equipment is safe to be in continued use until the next test.
How often should PAT testing be done?
PAT testing is an essential part of any companies maintenance and compliance programme, frequencies of formal visual inspections and formal combined visual inspections and tests vary dependant on two factors.

The first factor is the type of premisses for example Construction sites, Schools and Offices would all have differing periods of inspection due to the environment and frequency of use either by employees or the public.

The second factor is the age of an appliance and the amount of use an appliance has, for example a class 1 trouser press in a hotel room is advised to be inspected and tested every 6 months as it is used by the public but as the appliance ages the test results may indicate that more frequent testing is required due to the deterioration of the appliance and associated cabling. If you have any questions regarding the frequency of testing that should be carried out on your site, please contact a member of the team for some free advice.
What are the different classes of devices?

There are three main classes of devices, Class 1, Class 2 & Class 3

  • Class 1 equipment relies for its safety upon a satisfactory means of earthing for the fixed installation and an adequate connection to it normally via the flexible cable and a plug top.
  • Class 2 equipment relies on basic and an addition layer of insulation (doubly insulated) to protect the user from any of the conductive parts.
  • Class 3 equipment relies on a separated extra low voltage source to protect the user from electrocution.
