Do I need fire extinguisher training?

As a business owner you have a responsibility to train your employees in what to do in the event of a fire under the The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Training enables all employers/employees to feel confident in selecting the correct fire extinguisher for the correct type of fire should there be an emergency, there are 6 classes of fire and selecting the correct fire extinguisher will help to successfully extinguish the fire:

Class A - fires involving solid materials such as wood, paper or textiles.
Class B - fires involving flammable liquids such as petrol, diesel or oils.
Class C - fires involving gases.
Class D - fires involving metals.
Class E - fires involving live electrical apparatus.
Class F - fires involving cooking oils such as deep-fat fryers.

Fire Training FAQ's

How often should you have fire safety training?

There is no set frequency for when fire safety training should be undertaken, generally fire safety training is refreshed once a year this will ensure any new employees are then fully trained.

How long is the basic use fire extinguisher course?

Course times can vary depending on the existing knowledge of the individuals attending the course and if a practical session is required, generally the course will last for 1 - 2 hours.

What does the basic use fire extinguisher course cover?

The basic use course is made up of two parts, there is a classroom session which covers the theory of fire, the extinction of fire, the classes of fire and the types of fire extinguishers available. There is also a practical session which uses the information obtained in the theory session whilst getting hands on with two different types of fire extinguishers.

Does fire extinguisher training mean i can put out fires?

Basic use fire extinguisher training provides you with the knowledge of which fire extinguisher to select to help aid your escape or if small enough extinguish a fire in an emergency situation.
